Jacob M. Howard papers, 1796-1870

Legal, business, and political correspondence, journals (1836-67), ledgers (1833-62), law registers (1833-69), an index to law registers (1842-69), and election data (1865-71). The papers relate to Howard's Detroit law practice and to his political activities as a Whig and later as a founder of the Republican Party. Includes Charter Oak Mining Company correspondence (1846-50) ; correspondence relating to the Phoenix Bank of New York case (1830-60) and the case of Anastasia Carroll vs. Francis Tremble (1849-72); deeds (1702-1825) reflecting title transfers of Mansion House, a hotel in Albany, N. Y.; and Repentigny seigniory papers concerning a prolonged legal dispute over the title to land included in the seigniory at Sault Ste. Marie granted by King Louis XV of France to de Bonne and de Repentigny in 1750. Correspondents include Henry Clay, Edward Everett, Isaiah Thomas, and Daniel Webster.
